- Oldest daughter to a family that has served as pastors for generations.
- However, seeing as her father has only had daughters (3), none of them were expected to take up the calling.
- Due to recent change in legislation, women can now serve as ministers in the Danish National Church.
- Now in 1949, age 35, Ruth having finished studying theology during the War, she has served in various minor functions in Aarhus churches since.
- After women were allowed to become pastors, she has been searching for a church willing to accept her and found one in inner Copenhagen, the Saint Madeleine Church - across the country from where she's lived all her life.
- While her father was proud that she decided to pursue theology, he has mixed feelings about her becoming a pastor and moving away on her own.
- After moving to Copenhagen, she lives at the rectory apartment along with the church's main pastor and his wife, staying in the spare bedroom because it's improper that she should live alone, as a woman.
- The other pastor has a daughter, Emma, a decade younger than her who lives a rebellious, wild life and Ruth befriends her and ends up falling in love with her.
- Ruth has known she was attracted to women for a long time, but after she lost her first love, Laura, to illness when she was 25, she decided to study theology instead.
- Emma shows her a freedom and a hope that she hasn't felt for years, and she tries to combine her life as a pastor with a secret relationship to the younger woman, but eventually finds herself at a point where she must choose.
- In the end, Ruth returns to Aarhus along with Emma and they build a life for themselves there, Ruth opening a prepatory school for girls who wish to study theology.

- Stern, serious, no-nonsense, observant, dedicated, hard-working, intelligent, stubborn, proud, blunt.
